Correction, Retraction, and Withdrawal Policy

Policy Statement

Jurnal Surya Masyarakat (JSM), published by the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang, is committed to maintaining the accuracy, integrity, reliability, and transparency of its scholarly publication record.

JSM recognizes that errors, omissions, or ethical concerns may be identified during manuscript processing or after publication. To address these matters, the journal establishes procedures for article corrections, retractions, manuscript withdrawals, expressions of concern, and exceptional article removals.

These procedures are guided by the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the journal's Publication Ethics and Crossmark Policy.

1. Article Correction

A correction may be issued when a published article contains errors that affect its accuracy, clarity, attribution, or interpretation but do not invalidate its principal findings or conclusions.

JSM recognizes the following forms of correction:

Erratum: A correction of errors introduced during the editorial or production process, including formatting, tables, figures, author information, and article metadata.

Corrigendum: A correction of errors originating from the authors, including inaccuracies in data presentation, descriptions of community service activities, methodological information, or other relevant content.

Addendum: Additional information necessary to clarify or supplement a published article without substantially changing its main conclusions.

The Editor-in-Chief, in consultation with the editorial team when necessary, determines whether a formal correction notice is required.

Significant corrections will be documented through an appropriate notice linked to the original article.

2. Article Retraction

JSM may retract a published article when substantial evidence indicates that its findings, conclusions, or publication process are seriously compromised.

Retraction may be considered under the following circumstances:

  1. Fabrication, falsification, or manipulation of data, findings, images, or documentation.

  2. Plagiarism or substantial unattributed use of another person's work.

  3. Duplicate or redundant publication without appropriate disclosure or justification.

  4. Serious methodological or factual errors that invalidate the principal findings or conclusions.

  5. Significant ethical violations involving community participants, institutional authorization, confidentiality, or consent.

  6. Manipulation of the peer-review or editorial process.

  7. Other serious violations that undermine the reliability or integrity of the publication.

Before making a retraction decision, the editorial team will evaluate the available evidence and ordinarily provide the authors with an opportunity to respond.

The final editorial decision rests with the Editor-in-Chief, subject to appropriate conflict-of-interest safeguards.

A retraction notice will clearly identify the affected article, provide the reasons for retraction, and indicate who is responsible for the retraction.

Retracted articles will ordinarily remain accessible as part of the scholarly record and will be clearly identified as retracted. Where technically feasible, the PDF will also be marked with its retracted status.

3. Manuscript Withdrawal

Manuscript withdrawal refers to the termination of the editorial or publication process for a manuscript that has not yet been published.

Authors who wish to withdraw a manuscript must submit a formal written request to the Editor-in-Chief.

The request must include:

  1. The manuscript title and submission identification number.

  2. A clear explanation of the reason for withdrawal.

  3. Confirmation that all authors have been informed and agree with the request.

  4. The corresponding author's name and contact information.

The editorial team will evaluate the request and communicate the decision through the journal's editorial system or official correspondence.

Authors are expected to follow ethical submission practices and avoid simultaneous submissions to multiple journals.

Once an article has been formally published online, concerns regarding its validity or integrity will be addressed through the appropriate post-publication procedures rather than the silent withdrawal of its publication record.

4. Expression of Concern

An Expression of Concern may be issued when substantial concerns about the integrity or reliability of a published article have been raised, but the available evidence is insufficient to reach a definitive conclusion.

Such concerns may involve unresolved allegations of research misconduct, unreliable findings, ethical violations, or other matters requiring further investigation.

The journal may publish an Expression of Concern while an investigation is ongoing or when its outcome remains inconclusive.

The notice will identify the affected article and explain the nature of the concern without making unsupported allegations.

Following the investigation, the editorial team may issue a correction, retraction, clarification, or other appropriate notice.

5. Article Removal

The complete removal of published content will be considered only under exceptional circumstances, such as:

  • Serious legal violations or copyright infringement.

  • Breaches of confidentiality or personal privacy.

  • Court orders or other legally binding requirements.

  • Substantial risks to public health, safety, or the rights of individuals.

Where feasible, JSM will preserve the bibliographic metadata and provide a public notice explaining the removal.

Article removal is an exceptional action and must not be used as a substitute for an ordinary correction or retraction.

6. Editorial Assessment and Decision-Making

When potential errors or ethical concerns are reported, JSM will undertake the following procedures:

  1. Receive and document the report or request.

  2. Conduct an initial assessment of its relevance and supporting evidence.

  3. Request clarification from the authors or other relevant parties when necessary.

  4. Consult editorial board members, reviewers, institutions, or other appropriate parties when required.

  5. Determine whether a correction, retraction, withdrawal, expression of concern, or other editorial action is appropriate.

  6. Communicate the editorial decision to the relevant parties.

  7. Publish and link an appropriate notice when significant post-publication action is required.

  8. Update relevant publication metadata, including Crossref/Crossmark records, where applicable.

All decisions will be guided by fairness, confidentiality, editorial independence, transparency, and the available evidence.

7. Preservation of the Scholarly Record

JSM is committed to maintaining a transparent and reliable scholarly record.

Significant post-publication corrections, retractions, and related notices will be clearly identified and linked to the original articles.

Where appropriate, notices will receive their own DOI and relevant metadata relationships will be registered with Crossref.

The journal will preserve the original publication record wherever feasible and will not silently remove or replace published scholarly content.

Through its Crossmark Policy, JSM aims to provide readers with information about the current status of its publications and any significant post-publication changes.

8. Reporting Publication Concerns

Authors, reviewers, readers, and other stakeholders may report suspected errors, ethical violations, or concerns regarding published articles to the editorial team.

Reports should include the article title, DOI or publication URL, a description of the concern, and supporting information where available.

The editorial team will evaluate reports in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policies and applicable editorial standards.
