Policy Statement
Jurnal Surya Masyarakat (JSM), published by the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang, recognizes the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI), including generative AI technologies, in academic writing, community service activities, and scholarly publishing.
JSM supports the responsible, ethical, and transparent use of AI-assisted technologies while maintaining the principles of academic integrity, originality, accountability, and scholarly reliability.
This policy establishes guidelines for the use of AI technologies by authors, reviewers, and editors throughout the manuscript preparation, submission, peer-review, and publication processes.
1. Scope of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technologies
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to computational technologies capable of performing tasks that ordinarily require human intelligence, including data analysis, classification, prediction, language processing, and content generation.
Generative AI is a category of AI capable of producing text, images, audio, video, computer code, or other content in response to user instructions.
These technologies include large language models, AI-powered writing assistants, image generators, AI-assisted analytical tools, and other AI applications.
The use of these technologies must not compromise the accuracy, originality, ethical integrity, or credibility of scholarly publications.
This policy applies to AI technologies used in manuscript preparation, data processing, editorial activities, and scholarly publishing. Its provisions apply to authors, editors, and peer reviewers according to their respective responsibilities.
2. Permitted Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Authors may use AI technologies for supporting activities during manuscript preparation, including:
-
Language editing and grammatical correction.
-
Translation and improvement of linguistic clarity.
-
Organization and refinement of manuscript structure.
-
Assistance with formatting and presentation.
-
Technical support for data processing or visualization, provided that the procedures and outputs are verified by the authors.
AI-generated suggestions must be critically evaluated, revised where necessary, and verified against reliable sources.
Authors remain fully responsible for all content submitted for publication, regardless of whether AI technologies were used during manuscript preparation.
3. Prohibited and Unacceptable Uses
JSM prohibits the use of AI technologies to produce fabricated, misleading, or ethically unacceptable scholarly content.
Unacceptable practices include:
-
Fabricating or falsifying community service activities, field observations, participant responses, or program evaluation results.
-
Generating fictional references, citations, or bibliographic information and presenting them as authentic.
-
Producing artificial photographs, videos, or other documentation and presenting them as genuine evidence of community service activities.
-
Creating or manipulating data in ways that misrepresent actual community conditions, interventions, or outcomes.
-
Submitting substantial AI-generated content without appropriate critical evaluation, verification, or disclosure.
-
Reproducing copyrighted material without appropriate permission or acknowledgment.
-
Uploading confidential or personally identifiable information about community participants to external AI platforms without appropriate authorization and safeguards.
The use of AI technologies must not replace authentic community engagement, field implementation, data collection, observation, or evaluation.
4. Authorship and Accountability
AI systems, including chatbots and large language models, cannot be listed as authors or co-authors of articles submitted to JSM.
Authorship requires substantial intellectual contribution, accountability, approval of the final manuscript, and responsibility for the integrity of published content.
These responsibilities must be fulfilled by human authors.
All listed authors must review and approve the final manuscript, including any content prepared with AI assistance.
Authors are responsible for ensuring that AI-assisted content is accurate, original, properly attributed, and consistent with the actual community service activities being reported.
5. Disclosure of AI Use
Authors must transparently disclose the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies during manuscript preparation.
The disclosure should identify the AI tool used, its purpose, and the nature of its contribution to the manuscript.
Authors may use the following declaration when AI technologies have been employed:
"During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used [name of AI tool] for [specific purpose]. All AI-assisted content was reviewed, verified, and edited by the authors, who take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the manuscript."
When AI technologies have not been used, authors may state:
"The authors declare that no artificial intelligence (AI) technologies were used in the preparation of this manuscript."
The disclosure must be included in the AI Use Statement section of the manuscript, as specified in the official JSM article template.
When AI technologies are used as part of the methodology, data analysis, or development of scholarly materials, their role must also be explained in the relevant methodological section.
Authors must disclose the use or non-use of AI in their manuscripts. Where AI has been used, the declaration must identify the tool, its purpose, and its contribution to manuscript preparation. Authors remain fully accountable for the submitted content.
6. AI-Generated Images and Documentation
JSM emphasizes the importance of authenticity in reporting community service activities.
Photographs, illustrations, figures, and other visual materials presented as documentation of actual community service programs must accurately represent the activities performed.
AI-generated images must not be presented as authentic photographs of community participants, field activities, training sessions, interventions, or program outcomes.
AI-generated illustrations may be considered when they serve a legitimate explanatory purpose, are clearly identified as AI-generated, do not misrepresent actual events, and comply with relevant copyright and ethical requirements.
Authors must ensure that visual materials respect the privacy, dignity, and consent of community participants.
7. Responsibilities of Peer Reviewers
Jurnal Surya Masyarakat (JSM) prohibits peer reviewers from using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies during the peer-review process.
Reviewers must not use AI to analyze or evaluate manuscripts, generate review comments or recommendations, or upload manuscripts or any parts of manuscripts to AI applications.
Peer reviewers must conduct their evaluations independently, maintain manuscript confidentiality, and provide objective assessments based on their scholarly expertise.
8. Responsibilities of Editors
The JSM editorial team may use Artificial Intelligence (AI) for limited technical or administrative assistance, provided that confidentiality, data protection, and editorial independence are maintained.
The use of AI by editors must be transparently disclosed and documented, including its purpose and role in the editorial process. AI must not replace independent scholarly judgment or determine manuscript acceptance, revision, rejection, correction, or retraction.
Editors must not disclose confidential manuscript information to unauthorized AI systems. Final editorial decisions remain the responsibility of qualified human editors.
9. AI Detection and Manuscript Evaluation
Jurnal Surya Masyarakat (JSM) conducts official AI-generated writing detection as part of its internal editorial assessment, where the designated detection tools support the manuscript's language and format.
Authors are encouraged to perform independent AI screening before submission but are not required to submit AI detection reports. Official screening is conducted and documented by the editorial team.
An AI writing detection score of 20% or higher will trigger additional editorial assessment, rather than automatic manuscript rejection. Where reliable numerical detection is unavailable, including for unsupported languages, the editorial team will apply appropriate alternative assessment procedures.
AI detection results are preliminary indicators and must not serve as the sole basis for determining academic misconduct or manuscript rejection. Editorial decisions will consider manuscript originality, transparency, author accountability, and scholarly integrity.
Official AI screening reports are maintained as confidential editorial records and are not published alongside the article.
10. Ethical Responsibilities in Community Service Publications
Because JSM publishes scholarly reports of community service activities, authors must ensure that AI technologies do not distort the representation of communities, participants, institutions, or program outcomes.
Descriptions of community needs, intervention activities, participant involvement, and program achievements must be based on authentic information and verifiable evidence.
The use of AI must respect community rights, confidentiality, cultural contexts, institutional regulations, and applicable ethical standards.
11. Violations and Editorial Actions
Suspected violations of this policy will be evaluated by the editorial team based on available evidence and the seriousness of the concern.
Depending on the circumstances, JSM may:
-
Request clarification regarding AI use.
-
Require additional disclosure or manuscript revision.
-
Request verification of references, data, or visual documentation.
-
Reject manuscripts containing serious violations of publication ethics.
-
Initiate post-publication correction, retraction, or other appropriate procedures when necessary.
All editorial decisions will follow the principles of fairness, confidentiality, transparency, and accountability.
12. Reporting Concerns
Authors, reviewers, readers, and other stakeholders may report concerns regarding inappropriate or unethical use of AI technologies in submitted or published articles.
Reports should include relevant manuscript information and supporting evidence where available.
