Identification of Chemical Science Literacy Skills of Madrasah Aliyah Students in the Environmental Science Competency Aspect

Abstract


This study aims to identify the level of chemical science literacy of students at State Islamic Senior High Schools (MAN) throughout Bogor Regency in the aspect of environmental science competency in the context of the Basic Laws of Chemistry material. This study used a quantitative descriptive method involving 578 students determined using the Slovin formula. The research instrument was a 40-item scientific literacy test developed based on the PISA 2025 framework. The indicators of environmental science competency aspects measured included: (1) explaining the impact of human interactions with the Earth system, (2) making decisions based on scientific information and evidence to maintain the environment, and (3) showing respect for diverse perspectives in finding solutions to socio-ecological crises. The results showed that the first indicator obtained an average of 73.73, the second indicator 69.27, and the third indicator 71.37. Overall, chemical science literacy in the aspect of environmental science competency was in the high category. Students were able to connect chemical concepts with environmental issues such as pollution, climate change, and ecosystem degradation, with the highest achievement in the indicator of the ability to explain the impact of human interactions on the Earth system. However, the evidence-based decision-making indicator achieved the lowest achievement, thus indicating the need to strengthen higher-order thinking skills in analyzing data and formulating scientific solutions.
