Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement
Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statement
Our ethic statements are based on COPE’s Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors.
The publication of scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals managed by the Chemistry Education Study Program, Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang, represents an essential contribution to the continuous advancement, dissemination, and refinement of scientific knowledge.
The quality and integrity of published research reflect not only the scholarly competence and professional commitment of the authors but also the academic standards of the institutions with which they are affiliated. As a fundamental component of the scientific process, peer review plays a critical role in ensuring the validity, originality, transparency, and credibility of scholarly publications. Accordingly, clearly defined ethical standards must be established and consistently upheld by all parties involved in the publication process, including authors, editors, peer reviewers, publishers, and academic societies or institutions that own or sponsor scholarly journals.
The Chemistry Education Study Program, Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang, is committed to upholding the highest standards of publication ethics and integrity throughout every stage of the editorial and publication process. The journal recognizes its responsibility to ensure transparency, accountability, fairness, and professionalism in the management of scholarly manuscripts.
Furthermore, the journal maintains editorial independence by ensuring that advertising, reprints, and other sources of commercial revenue do not influence editorial decisions or compromise the objectivity of the peer-review process. Where appropriate, the Editorial Board also facilitates communication and collaboration with other journals and publishers to promote responsible publication practices, address ethical concerns, and strengthen the overall integrity of scholarly communication.
Duties of Authors
Reporting standards
Authors of reports of original research should present an accurate account of the work performed as well as an objective discussion of its significance. Underlying data should be represented accurately in the paper. A paper should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behaviour and are unacceptable.
Data access and retention
Authors are asked to provide the raw data in connection with a paper for editorial review, and should be prepared to provide public access to such data (consistent with the ALPSP-STM Statement on Data and Databases), if practicable, and should in any event be prepared to retain such data for a reasonable time after publication. The authors should ensure that they have written entirely original works, and if the authors have used the work and/or words of others that this has been appropriately cited or quoted.
Originality and plagiarism
Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts present original scholarly work. Any ideas, statements, data, or findings derived from the work of others must be appropriately acknowledged through accurate citation or quotation in accordance with established academic standards. Plagiarism encompasses various forms of academic misconduct, including presenting another person's work as one's own, reproducing or paraphrasing substantial portions of previously published work without proper attribution, and claiming research results obtained by other researchers. All forms of plagiarism constitute serious violations of publication ethics and are strictly prohibited.
Multiple, redundant or concurrent publication
An author should not in general publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently constitutes unethical publishing behaviour and is unacceptable Proper acknowledgment of the work of others must always be given. Authors should cite publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work.
Acknowledgement of sources
Authors must provide appropriate acknowledgment of all sources and contributions that have informed or influenced their research. Relevant publications that have significantly contributed to the conceptualization, development, or interpretation of the reported study must be properly cited. Information acquired through private communications, including conversations, correspondence, or discussions with other individuals, may only be used or disclosed with the explicit written consent of the original source. Similarly, information obtained through confidential professional activities, such as manuscript peer review or the evaluation of research grant proposals, must not be utilized or disseminated without the explicit written permission of the author concerned.
Authorship of the paper
Authorship should be attributed exclusively to individuals who have made substantial scholarly contributions to the conception, research design, implementation, analysis, or interpretation of the study. All individuals who meet these criteria must be appropriately recognized as co-authors. Individuals who have contributed to specific aspects of the research but do not satisfy the criteria for authorship should be acknowledged accordingly or identified as contributors. The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all co-authors have reviewed and approved the final manuscript and have explicitly consented to its submission for publication.
Hazards and human or animal subjects
Authors must clearly disclose any potential or inherent hazards associated with the chemicals, procedures, or equipment used in their research within the manuscript. For studies involving human participants or animals, authors are required to confirm that all research procedures comply with applicable legislation, institutional regulations, and relevant ethical guidelines, and that approval has been obtained from the appropriate institutional ethics committee or review board, where required. In research involving human participants, the manuscript must also explicitly state that informed consent was obtained from the participants or their legally authorized representatives, as applicable. Throughout the research process and publication, authors must ensure that the privacy, confidentiality, dignity, and other relevant rights of human participants are adequately protected.
Disclosure and conflicts of interest
All authors are required to disclose any financial, professional, or other substantive conflicts of interest that could reasonably be perceived as influencing the research findings, data interpretation, or conclusions presented in their manuscript. Authors must also transparently acknowledge all sources of financial support received for the research. Relevant disclosures may include, but are not limited to, employment relationships, consultancy engagements, stock ownership, honoraria, paid expert testimony, patent applications or registrations, research grants, and other forms of financial or material support. Any actual or potential conflicts of interest must be declared as early as possible in the submission and publication process to ensure transparency, maintain editorial integrity, and uphold public trust in scholarly research.
Fundamental errors in published works
Authors are responsible for promptly informing the journal editor or publisher upon discovering any significant errors or inaccuracies in their published work. They must cooperate fully with the editorial team to facilitate the necessary corrections, revisions, or retraction of the article, as appropriate. If the editor or publisher is notified by a third party of a substantial error in a published article, the authors are expected to respond without undue delay by correcting or retracting the publication, where warranted, or by providing sufficient evidence to substantiate the accuracy and validity of the original findings. Such actions are essential to maintaining the integrity, reliability, and credibility of the scholarly record.
Duties of Editors
The editor of a peer-reviewed journal is responsible for deciding which of the articles submitted to the journal should be published, often working in conjunction with the relevant society (for society-owned or sponsored journals). The validation of the work in question and its importance to researchers and readers must always drive such decisions. The editor may be guided by the policies of the journal's editorial board and constrained by such legal requirements as shall then be in force regarding libel, copyright infringement and plagiarism. The editor may confer with other editors or reviewers (or society officers) in making this decision.
An editor at any time evaluate manuscripts for their intellectual content without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy of the authors.
The editor and any editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate.
Editors must respect the confidentiality of manuscripts submitted for publication and must not use unpublished data, findings, or other materials disclosed in a manuscript for their own research without obtaining the author's explicit written consent. Information, ideas, or insights acquired through the peer-review process must remain confidential and must not be exploited for personal, professional, or other forms of advantage. Editors are also required to disclose and appropriately manage any actual or potential conflicts of interest. When a conflict arises from competitive, collaborative, professional, or other relationships with authors, affiliated companies, or institutions associated with a submitted manuscript, the editor must withdraw from the editorial evaluation and decision-making process and delegate these responsibilities to an independent co-editor, associate editor, or another qualified member of the Editorial Board. Furthermore, editors must require all relevant contributors to disclose competing interests and ensure that appropriate corrections or clarifications are published whenever undisclosed conflicts of interest are identified.

Duties of Reviewers
Peer review assists the editor in making editorial decisions and through the editorial communications with the author may also assist the author in improving the paper. Any selected referee who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that its prompt review will be impossible should notify the editor and excuse himself from the review process. Any manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be shown to or discussed with others except as authorized by the editor. Reviews should be conducted objectively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Referees should express their views clearly with supporting arguments.Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. Any statement that an observation, derivation, or argument had been previously reported should be accompanied by the relevant citation. A reviewer should also call to the editor's attention any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published paper of which they have personal knowledge. Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers.
Retraction and/or Corrections
In certain circumstances, the retraction of a published article may be necessary to preserve the integrity and reliability of the scholarly record. Such circumstances may include inadvertent errors arising during the research process that substantially affect the validity of the findings, serious breaches of publication ethics, data fabrication or falsification, extensive plagiarism, or other forms of research misconduct that undermine the credibility of the published work. When these issues compromise the accuracy, validity, or ethical integrity of an article, appropriate retraction procedures must be undertaken to maintain the trustworthiness of the scientific literature and uphold the standards of responsible scholarly publishing.
When an article is retracted, the original publication will remain accessible on the journal's website for archival and reference purposes and will be clearly marked with a "RETRACTED" watermark to inform readers of its status. Retracted articles should not be relied upon as valid scientific evidence or used as a basis for further research due to concerns regarding their reliability and credibility. The retraction notice will retain the authorship and institutional affiliations associated with the original publication to ensure that the retraction notice and the affected article can be readily identified and linked in scholarly indexing and abstracting databases. Furthermore, the retraction notice will be published in the journal's current issue to ensure transparent dissemination of the information. Where the identified errors affect only specific parts of an article and do not invalidate the entire publication, a partial retraction may be issued, as appropriate.
The mechanism follows the guidelines from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) which can be accessed at: Retraction guidelines | COPE: Committee on Publication Ethics

AI Policy
Jurnal Pendidikan Sains Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang acknowledges the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning in academic publishing. With the increasing availability of generative AI tools—including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and others—Research in Education underscores the need to consider both their benefits and the ethical issues they may raise. This policy presents the journal’s official stance on the use of AI technologies by authors, reviewers, and editorial teams, and ensures alignment with the guidelines established by Elsevier and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Use of AI Tools by Authors
Authors may use AI tools to assist in manuscript preparation as long as their use is conducted transparently, ethically, and responsibly. Such tools may support activities like language refinement, grammar correction, or formatting of references. However, AI must not be employed to create content that replaces the authors’ original scientific reasoning or interpretation of findings. Importantly, authors retain full responsibility for all aspects of their submission, including any portions produced with the aid of AI technologies.
Consistent with the COPE Position Statement (2023), AI tools are not eligible to be credited as authors under any conditions. Authorship requires accountability, the ability to provide consent, and a demonstrable intellectual contribution—criteria that AI systems cannot meet. Accordingly, all listed authors must be human contributors who satisfy recognized authorship standards.
Disclosure of AI Use
Authors are required to provide complete disclosure of any AI tools used during the preparation of their manuscripts. This applies to all forms of AI assistance, including text generation, image production, data processing, programming support, or translation. Such disclosure must be included in the “Declaration of the Use of AI” section and should clearly state the tool’s name, version, and the specific purpose for which it was employed.
For example, authors may include a statement such as:
“The author(s) employed OpenAI’s ChatGPT to assist with wording and stylistic refinement in the Introduction section. All generated text was thoroughly reviewed and validated by the authors.”
Failure to disclose AI usage may be considered a breach of ethical publishing standards and could result in rejection or retraction of the article.
For authors who did not use any AI tools in the preparation of their work, no disclosure statement is required. Authors may simply omit any reference to AI use in the declaration.
If authors prefer to state this explicitly, they may include an optional statement such as:
“The author(s) affirm that no artificial intelligence (AI) tools were used in the writing, analysis, or preparation of this manuscript.”
Author Responsibility and Accountability
Authors bear full responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of their manuscripts. Although AI tools may be used to support writing or other tasks, it is the authors’ duty to ensure that the final work is original, precise, and appropriate. Authors must carefully check that any AI-assisted content does not include fabricated citations, inaccurate scientific information, biased interpretations, or plagiarized material.
Any inappropriate use of AI—such as submitting manuscripts that are wholly or predominantly generated by AI without proper oversight or disclosure—will be regarded as unethical behavior in line with COPE standards and the editorial policies of the Journal of Science Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang.
