Author Guidelines

1. Aims and Scope

Jurnal Statistika Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang publishes original research articles and critical review articles in statistics. The journal focuses on contributions to statistical theory, methodology, computation, modeling, and applications.

The journal welcomes manuscripts in, but not limited to, the following areas:

  • Statistical theory, inference, and modeling, including frequentist and Bayesian approaches.
  • Multivariate, categorical, nonparametric, survival, time-series, spatial, and spatio-temporal statistics.
  • Sampling methods, survey statistics, small-area estimation, experimental design, and quality control.
  • Statistical computing, statistical learning, machine learning with a clear statistical contribution, and probabilistic or hybrid statistical models.
  • Applications of statistical methods in fields such as health, economics, social sciences, education, industry, agriculture, and environmental science.

Applied studies are within the journal’s scope when statistical methods are central to the research. Authors must explain why the methods are appropriate for the research question and data, report and interpret the results adequately, and show the contribution or useful insight provided by the analysis.

Applied studies do not have to introduce a new statistical method. However, manuscripts that only report routine analysis, software output, or a local case description without adequate statistical justification, interpretation, and synthesis are not suitable for the journal.

Research in mathematics, computer science, finance, or operations research may be considered when it makes a substantive and explicit contribution to statistical theory, methods, modeling, computation, or applications.

The journal publishes original research articles and critical review articles. Review articles must clearly describe their search strategy, source selection, and approach to analysis and synthesis.

2. Originality and Submission

  1. The submitted manuscript must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration by another journal.
  2. Authors must disclose related manuscripts, preprints, or prior publications that overlap with the submission.
  3. All authors must approve the submitted version and agree to its submission.
  4. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reuse copyrighted tables, figures, instruments, or other materials.
  5. The corresponding author must confirm that author names, author order, and affiliations have been approved by all co-authors.

3. Language and Manuscript File

  1. Manuscripts must be written in clear and consistent English.
  2. Submit the manuscript as a Microsoft Word file using the latest journal template.
  3. Follow the page layout, fonts, heading styles, table and figure formats, and reference examples shown in the template.
  4. Do not modify the template’s column structure or formatting styles.
  5. Replace instructional text and placeholders with manuscript-specific content. Check grammar, spelling, terminology, and consistency before submission. The editor may return manuscripts requiring substantial language or formatting correction.

4. Peer Review and Anonymized Submission

The journal uses double-anonymous peer review. For review, authors must submit an anonymized manuscript without author names, affiliations, acknowledgments, or other information that could identify the authors. Remove identifying information from the anonymized manuscript and its file properties. Author and affiliation information must be provided separately through the submission metadata or a separate title page.

After acceptance, prepare the final manuscript using the journal template, including author names, affiliations, and the corresponding author’s email address.

5. Title, Authors, and Affiliations

Title. The title should be concise, descriptive, and consistent with the manuscript’s content. Where relevant, it should reflect the research problem, statistical method, or study setting. Avoid titles that are too broad or that overstate the findings.

Authors and affiliations. In the final manuscript, provide the full name of each author. Use superscript numbers to link authors to their affiliations where necessary. Each affiliation should include the department or study program, faculty or school, institution, city, and country. Follow the journal template for affiliation formatting.

Identify the corresponding author with an asterisk and provide that author’s email address. Affiliation markers identify institutional affiliations; they do not indicate author order or contribution. If multiple authors share the same affiliation, use one affiliation entry for them.

6. Article Information, Abstract, and Keywords

Article information. Select the applicable article type in the template: Research Article or Review Article. The Received, Revised, Accepted, and Available Online dates are completed by the editorial office; authors should leave these fields blank.

Abstract. Provide a single-paragraph abstract of 100–250 words, following the journal template. Briefly describe the research background or problem, objective, data and statistical method, principal results, and conclusion. The abstract must be clear and understandable on its own. Do not include citations or equations. Explain abbreviations if they are necessary.

Keywords. Provide three to six keywords, separated by semicolons. Choose terms that represent the research topic, statistical method, and application area.

7. Manuscript Structure

Use the section headings and order shown in the journal template. Subsections may be added when they improve the organization of the article.

7.1 Introduction. The Introduction should explain the research problem and its importance, review relevant literature, and establish the position of the study in relation to previous work. It should:

  1. Describe the research problem and why it matters.
  2. Synthesize relevant previous studies, including recent primary research where appropriate.
  3. Identify what remains unresolved and state the research gap.
  4. Explain the study’s novelty, distinction, or contribution.
  5. State the research objective or questions.

A list of previous studies without comparison or synthesis is not an adequate literature review. Relevant literature and the research gap may be discussed in the Introduction. A separate Literature Review section may be included when it improves the organization of the manuscript.

7.2 Materials and Methods. Describe the data and methods in sufficient detail for readers to assess and, where possible, reproduce the analysis. Include, as applicable:

  • Data source, study period, population, sampling procedure, and inclusion or exclusion criteria.
  • Research variables, instruments, measurements, and data-processing procedures.
  • The statistical model, estimator, algorithm, or mathematical procedure.
  • Why the selected method is appropriate for the research question and data.
  • Model assumptions and how they were assessed.
  • The meaning of each symbol, parameter, and abbreviation.
  • Software, package names, and version numbers.
  • Validation, sensitivity analysis, or uncertainty assessment, where relevant.
  • Ethics approval and informed consent, where applicable.

Do not identify a statistical method by name only. Explain how it was applied and why it is suitable. For established methods, cite the original or an authoritative methodological source and describe any modification made in the study. For comparisons between statistical methods, explain the comparison design, evaluation criteria, data partitioning or validation procedure, and the basis for selecting the preferred method.

The template provides suggested subsections for study design or review approach; data sources and variables; sampling, search, and data collection; and statistical analysis or evidence synthesis. Authors may adapt these subsections to the study while retaining the main section heading Materials and Methods.

7.3 Results and Discussion. Present Results and Discussion as a combined section, following the journal template. Organize the findings in a logical order that follows the research objectives.

Report and interpret the findings rather than merely listing values or reproducing software output. Explain the main patterns, compare the findings with relevant literature, and discuss their statistical, practical, or contextual implications. The discussion should synthesize the findings rather than repeat them. Tables and figures should support the explanation and should not replace analysis in the text.

7.4 Conclusion. The Conclusion should directly answer the research objective and state the study’s main findings. Include limitations that may affect interpretation and, where appropriate, suggestions for further research. Do not introduce results that have not been presented in the manuscript or simply repeat the Results and Discussion section.

7.5 Ethical Approval. For research involving human participants, identifiable personal information, or animals, provide the name of the approving ethics committee or institution and the approval or protocol number. Include a statement on informed consent when relevant. If ethical approval was not required, explain briefly why.

7.6 Acknowledgment. An Acknowledgment section may be included to recognize individuals, organizations, or institutions that provided relevant support. Identify funding sources and project numbers where applicable. Do not include acknowledgments in the anonymized manuscript submitted for review; add them to the final manuscript after acceptance.

7.7 Author Contributions. Include an Author Contributions statement using the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) terms provided in the template. Identify each author by initials and assign only roles that accurately describe contributions made to the work. Multiple roles may be assigned to one author, and a role may be shared by several authors. All authors should agree with the statement. In the final manuscript, provide the author-specific contribution statement; remove the template’s instructional text, role descriptions, and example.

7.8 Conflict of Interest. Disclose financial or non-financial relationships that could reasonably be perceived as influencing the research or its interpretation. If no relevant conflict exists, include the statement: “The authors declare no conflict of interest.”

7.9 Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies. This declaration applies to manuscripts submitted for issues published from 2027 onward. Complete the declaration section in the journal template. If generative AI or AI-assisted tools were used to prepare the manuscript, identify the tool and briefly describe its role. Authors must verify all AI-assisted content and remain responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the manuscript. AI tools must not be listed as authors. If no such tools were used, include the no-use statement provided in the template. Remove the template’s instructions and examples from the final manuscript.

8. Equations, Tables, and Figures

  • Number equations consecutively when they are cited in the text.
  • Define every symbol and parameter at first use and use notation consistently.
  • Number tables and figures consecutively and cite them in the text.
  • Place table titles above tables and figure captions below figures, following the template.
  • Prepare tables as editable Word tables; do not submit tables as images.
  • Prepare figures at publication quality; do not use low-resolution screenshots of software output.
  • Use clear English labels, consistent terminology, and units where relevant.
  • Explain the main findings shown in each table or figure in the manuscript text.

9. Citations and References

Use the IEEE numbered citation style shown in the journal template.

  • Number references in the order in which they first appear in the text.
  • Cite sources using square brackets, for example, [1] or [2], [3].
  • Ensure every in-text citation has a corresponding entry in the reference list and every reference-list entry is cited in the text.
  • Provide complete bibliographic details and a DOI or stable URL where available.
  • Use a reference-management application such as Mendeley, EndNote, or Zotero to help maintain consistency.

Original research articles should normally include at least 15 relevant references. Give priority to primary research articles and authoritative methodological sources. References should generally reflect recent work, preferably published within the previous five years. Older sources may be cited when they are foundational or necessary for the theory or method. Relevant books published within the previous ten years may also be cited.

10. Similarity Screening and Originality

Submissions may be screened using similarity-detection software, including Turnitin or iThenticate. The similarity index should generally be below 30%. This percentage is a screening benchmark and does not, by itself, determine whether plagiarism has occurred or the editorial decision. Editors assess the context and nature of matched text. Authors must cite sources accurately and must not engage in plagiarism, unattributed reuse, or duplicate publication.
